Palacký University Olomouc is a modern university with a rich history. The university was granted the full rights of other European universities in 1573. It was restored under its present name in 1946, and after 1989 the number of faculties grew to today’s eight. It prides itself as a friendly institution with supportive teachers and an intellectually stimulating environment. Students present at UP are given sufficient space for their extracurricular activities, whether at university sports facilities or culture and social events.
Palacký University is a modern research university. New modern science and research centres with state-of-the-art equipment, collaborating with prominent institutes throughout the world, have been built within the city thanks to UP projects.
The University collaborates with a number of partnership institutions abroad. UP strongly supports internalisation in education, science, and research, and the international mobility of students as well as academic and scientific staff. Special attention is paid to the development of strategic international partnerships in education, science, and research. In 2019, Palacký University has been awarded by EAIE Award 2019 for excellence in internationalisation.
The Olomouc alma mater has confirmed its status among important science and research institutes by the activities conducted at the Technology Park, which connects the University with industrial partners. It also offers services business consultation services to students.
The University provides a high-quality environment for its students and employees. Dozens of facilities have been newly built or renovated. Modern accommodation facilities, dining services, the university library, sporting facilities, and counselling services are available to all students and employees.
Comprehensive counselling is provided by experts to all students, academic employees, alumni as well as applicants coping with difficult situations in life. The University houses a profession counselling centre, a support centre for students with special needs, and a guidance centre for achieving a healthy lifestyle.
Palacký University also promotes the development of civic society in the Czech Republic; a number of its activities fulfil the ethos of the institution, that for which it was established. In 2018 it launched Civic University UniON – a volunteer project, which organises free educational lectures for public.
A Research University
University has recently created and further developed a number of top research institutes where hundreds of international experts are employed, involving students during their studies to participate in the research.
Biomedicine, biotechnology and new materials are the main focus of the Institute of Molecular and Translational Medicine specialising in research on neoplastic and infectious diseases, and the development of new diagnostic procedures and medications. The institute is part of the European Research Infrastructure EATRIS.
Researchers at the Centre of the Haná Region for Biotechnological and Agricultural Research are among the world’s leading experts. Their achievements range from the genetic engineering of barley to sequencing the wheat genome.
The Regional Centre of Advanced Technologies and Materials focuses on chemical and optical research. Its researchers participate in international applications of nanotechnologies in groundwater treatment and research on the essence of matter at CERN. They also install optical elements for the detection of high-energy cosmic radiation at observatories.
The “SINOFON” project led by research team at the Faculty of Arts explores how the Sinophone world interacts with the Turco-Persophone, Slavophone, Tibetophone, Hispanophone and Austroasiatophone worlds at the Faculty of Arts. Important works of European Christian culture are popularised by the Centre for Patristic, Medieval and Renaissance Texts at Sts Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology. The Faculty of Education operates a new facility with unique speech therapy and typhlo-informatics laboratories and other specialised workplaces. The BALUO Application Centre and Center for Kinanthropology Research at the Faculty of Physical Culture combines research on movement and lifestyle with practical applications. The Centre for Clinical Legal Education helps span the gap between theory and practice. The Social Health Institute focuses its research on themes involving inequality in health and health determinants of vulnerable groups, such as adolescents, seniors, ill persons.

The eight faculties offer a variety of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral study programmes, ranging from theology, education, physical culture and sports, through the humanities, social sciences and arts, to natural, medical, and health sciences. The credit system at UP is fully compatible with ECTS – The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System. The prestigious status of the University in Olomouc is confirmed each year by the vast numbers of young applicants, as well as mature students such as seniors.
You can choose from 97 degree programmes taught in English, among others General Medicine, Dentistry, International Development Studies, Euroculture, Kinanthropology, Physiotherapy, Special Education, Special Needs Counselling or European and International Law.

Community
Almost 20% of all people in Olomouc are university students which makes Olomouc one of the biggest student city in the Czech Republic. A second home to roughly 22 thousand students from all over the world lies in the site of the second-largest historical monument area in the Czech Republic. A leading travel guide Lonely Planet has ranked Olomouc for two years in a row among the top ten destinations in all of Europe, claiming that “Olomouc is one of the Czech Republic’s most underrated destinations, with a great nightlife scene and a mini-Prague feel”. Dozens of parks, cozy cafés, restaurants, theatres, diverse music clubs, and varied sporting centers are also waiting for every student. Foreign students can rely on the help of organizations such as ESN or AIESEC which organize plenty of events, e.g. Orientations Days. University also holds a lot of leisure time activities from cultural events, concerts, summer cinema projections, public lectures and workshops in parks or university gardens to various sports activities. Focusing on environmental and voluntary aspects, the university also offers a student free shop for swapping useful things, community garden or university voluntary center.
