The Washington and Lee University School of Law is a small private law school in Virginia. The first-year curriculum is made up of required courses, while students primarily take electives in their second year. The third year at W&L Law focuses on lawyer engagement, and students are trained through experiences like practice-based simulations, externships and clinics. Students aren’t expected to pick a particular track or concentration, but they can customize their education through electives.
Students can choose from a handful of legal clinics for hands-on training, including one that assists coal miners who developed black lung disease in getting federal benefits, and another that aids attorneys representing defendants facing the death penalty. Students can also get involved with legal journals at the law school, including the Washington and Lee Law Review, the Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice, and the German Law Journal. The School of Law is Washington and Lee’s only graduate program. Students typically live within walking distance or a short drive of campus.
After graduation, about a fifth of Washington and Lee law graduates practice in Washington.
