The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University (Kellogg) offers these departments and concentrations: accounting, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, general management, health care administration, leadership, marketing, not-for-profit management, production/operations management, organizational behavior, portfolio management, public administration, public policy, real estate, quantitative analysis/statistics and operations research, and technology. Its tuition is full-time: $74,871 per year; part-time: $7,273 per credit; and executive: $108,918 per year. At graduation, 80.60 percent of graduates of the full-time program are employed.

Students at the Kellogg School of Management can choose from a variety of graduate degree programs, including a traditional full-time MBA program and a part-time MBA program with classes in the evenings and on Saturdays. MBA students who want to earn additional credentials can also pursue a master’s degree in design innovation through the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science or a J.D. through Northwestern Law School. Several different Ph.D. programs are also available, including one in management, organizations and sociology with the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. Courses at Kellogg focus on teamwork and experiential learning, and students can study abroad or participate in international field research.

Outside of classes, students can get involved in more than a dozen research centers, such as the General Motors Research Center for Strategy in Management and the Center for Executive Women. Guest speakers give talks regularly. There are also more than 100 student organizations to join, which include academic and social clubs. Full-time MBA students take classes on Northwestern’s campus in Evanston, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. Some graduate students are able to live in on-campus housing.

There are more than 50,000 Kellogg graduates, including Ted Phillips, president and CEO of the Chicago Bears, and Ellen Kullman, chair and CEO of DuPont.

The School of Law at Northwestern University (Pritzker) has an application deadline of Feb. 15. The full-time program application fee at the School of Law at Northwestern University (Pritzker) is $75. Its tuition is full-time: $68,800. The student-faculty ratio is 4.5:1.

Students interested in the Northwestern Law School should keep in mind that it’s the only school in the country that “strongly encourages” applicants to interview with the Admissions Committee on campus, according to the school’s website. Applicants to the accelerated J.D. program, a program pioneered at Northwestern Law that takes two years to complete, are encouraged to interview. In addition to the traditional and accelerated J.D. programs, students can complete joint degrees including a J.D./MBA in conjunction with the highly ranked Kellogg School of Management or a J.D./Ph.D. with the Northwestern Graduate School. There are no part-time or evening classes for J.D. candidates.

The school offers several Moot Court and Trial Team groups, and all students are required to take part in the Arlyn Miner First-Year Moot Court Program. There are about five legal journals for second and third year students to join, as well as more than 30 student organizations. The school’s Bluhm Legal Clinic helps students gain skills including interviewing, counseling and negotiating, and the Fred Bartlit Center for Trial Strategy uses simulation-based teaching to train students in trial advocacy and more. For students looking for housing, there is limited space in family housing on campus, and the school helps students locate private, off-campus housing throughout Chicago.

Among the scores of notable alumni of Northwestern Law School are retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, the first African American mayor of Chicago, Harold Washington, and the first female American law school graduate, Ada Kepley.

Curricula Descriptions

Four-year program curriculum

Feinberg educates students to become compassionate, innovative physicians, educators and researchers, who are also inquiry-driven leaders. The three-phase curriculum is anchored by four elements with different learning objectives and developmental milestones. These, along with early longitudinal clinical immersion, positions FSM graduates to be life-long learners, ready for 21st century medicine.

The Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University (McCormick) has an application deadline of Dec. 15. The application fee is $95 for U.S. residents and $95 for international students. Its tuition is full-time: $58,029 per year and part-time: $6,882 per credit. The 2020 Ph.D. student-faculty ratio is 4.9:1. The Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University (McCormick) has 207 full-time faculty on staff.

The McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University budgets $1.5 billion each year for research efforts. That money is put to good use at the more than two dozen research institutes and centers housed at the school’s campus in Evanston, Ill. Research focuses at McCormick include biotechnology, information technology, nanotechnology, and service and infrastructure technologies.

Graduate students at McCormick can choose from 15 full-time master’s degree programs offered across the school’s eight departments, including biotechnology, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, and engineering design and innovation. The school also offers four part-time master’s programs: engineering management, information technology, product design and development, and project management.

Part-time students in the IT program meet every Saturday, while those in the project management program attend late-afternoon and evening courses. Classes for the part-time design and development program meet once a week, alternating Fridays or Saturdays, and the engineering management track meets weeknights in either Evanston or Bensenville, a suburb of Chicago.

Students can also carve out time outside of the classroom and research labs to bike along Lake Michigan, take the El to downtown Chicago, or dig their toes into the sand at the on-campus beach, weather permitting.

Notable graduates from Northwestern’s McCormick School include Deepak Ahuja, CFO for electric car manufacturer Tesla Motors; Virginia “Ginni” Rometty, CEO of IBM; and Daryl Morey, general manager of the NBA’s Houston Rockets.

The School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University has an application deadline of Dec. 4. The application fee for the education program at Northwestern University is $95. The School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University has 39 full-time faculty on staff with a 2.3:1 ratio of full-time equivalent doctoral students to full-time faculty.

Students looking for a intimate academic community may find an ideal fit at the School of Education and Social Policy (SESP), the smallest department at Northwestern University. There are only about 300 graduate students and slightly more than 20 faculty members. Students can live on Northwestern’s lakefront campus in Evanston, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, and can complete teaching placements and service work in nearby city schools.

There are five degree options for students to earn a master of arts or science or a doctorate. There is also an accelerated program, NU-TEACH, which puts students in their own, supervised classrooms after a single summer of coursework. Following a successful first year, NU-TEACH students must commit to teaching for at least four more years at Chicago schools.

Students can get involved in research projects at school centers like the Asset-Based Community Development Institute and the Center for Connected Learning. Students can also participate in initiatives like Promote 360, a campus organization committed to the well being of minority students through high school mentoring and advocacy work. After completing a degree, SESP alumni can get job placement help through the Northwestern University Public Interest Program.

Notable alumni of the Northwesten School of Education and Social Policy include Amy Liu, cofounder of the Brookings Institution Center on Urban and Metropolitan Policy, and author Shadd Maruna, who wrote the award-winning “Making Good: How Ex-Convicts Reform and Rebuild Their Lives.”
